Detox Diet
The aim of a detox diet is not to enable weight loss (although this is a welcome
side effect for many people) it is to cleanse the body of toxins.
Many people argue that the body does not need cleansing as organs such
as the liver and kidneys do this on a regular basis for you. But consider all the toxins that our bodies absorb.
Artificial additives
Pesticides
Fumes – from cars, industry etc
Potions and lotions that we rub into our skin, spray on or bathe in.
Poisons such as fluoride in our drinking water and toothpaste.
To name just a few
Not only do we absorb huge amounts of toxins many of us do not put the right
ingredients in our bodies to help deal with these toxins. To keep our bodies healthy and help prevent diseases such as cancer we need to
consume antioxidants.
Antioxidants prevent free radicals from causing cell damage within the
body.
The best detox diet would be high in foods that provide antioxidants (fruit and
vegetables) it would also provide you with protein and carbohydrates to support and work with your body. Unfortunately many of
these diets restrict the intake of anything other than fruit, vegetables and water for periods of up to 21 days. According to the
majority of medical professionals this can be dangerous and cause all sorts of complications.
It is fine to restrict certain things in our diets, like refined sugar, tea,
coffee and even food groups such as meat and dairy as long as you replace them with foods that will provide you with the same range of
nutrients.
When starting a detox diet ensure that you go about it in a healthy manner.
Remember it shouldn’t be about restrictions it should be about nourishing the body with whole foods to enable the elimination of
toxins.
If you feel that you may have an intolerance to something you are eating.
Starting a detox diet may be a simple way of discovering which foods are causing your symptoms. In this case you would have to make
restrictions but as long as you make nutritional replacements it should be safe.
The ideal scenario would be to do this under the guidance of a nutritionist although it can be expensive and if you undertake
plenty of research and take good notes on the way you feel day to day you are unlikely to do any harm, in fact you will probably do yourself
some good.
A detox is not just about what you put into your body from a food point of view.
A good detox diet will also include relaxation, exercise and other mind and body cleansing techniques. Often it will involve switching off the
TV and stimulating your mind in a creative way for example painting, playing instruments etc or dry body brushing before a daily bath or
shower.
In the first few days of any detox diet you will suffer from symptoms such as
headaches and tiredness. This is because your body is detoxing from refined sugar, tea coffee etc. Once you have completed your detox you
should notice that you have more energy, a clearer mind, brighter eyes, better skin and you should have lost some weight.
At the end of a detox diet be cautious of returning to normal eating. Take it
slowly and don’t go back to those bad old habits such as junk food and TV every night.
